Mail art is a world wide cultural movement that began in the early 1960‘s and involves sending art, visual as well as other forms, through the postal system. Join Dea Fischer, local collage artist and bookbinder and create your own mail art!! Materials provided but feel free to bring any paper, ephemera or found objects you may want to incorporate.
With a growing reputation as the maker of beautiful artist's books, Dea Fischer has an extensive background in bookbinding and collage techniques. She has taught popular courses in bookbinding, altered books and collage for the last six years. Dea holds an LLB (Honours) Degree, but a 15-year career as a lawyer, trainer and writer left little time and room for her art. 2004 brought a life change and a return to Canada. DAVID ESO - The What and Why of Haiku
This workshop is aimed at the readers and writers of any genres, but will explore this short poetic form. Trace Haiku from its beginnings in ancient Japan to its modern versions. Clarity of mind is the forge and gift of Haiku. We will be walking to a nearby outside venue.
David Eso is one of Canmore’s most active writers. In 2009 he founded the Migratory Words collective which hosts writer’s circles, workshops, residencies, and is now publishing local poets and authors. His poetry has appeared most recently in the Tightrope books collection STRANGERS IN PARIS.

CORI BREWSTER - Songwriting; "There are no rules in songwriting"
There are no rules in songwriting -- but there are "tools" that can help you achieve your goals and there are "common denominators" that occur over and over again in successful songs – songs that touch the hearts of audiences. We will look at the nuts and bolts of songs: Topics that we’ll cover are: what are the essential elements in a successful lyric, pitfalls to avoid, making rhyme your friend, creating lyrical contrast, surviving second verse hell and an intro to chord chemistry.
Cori Brewster has been a performing singer-songwriter for 20 years, having four, CD releases to her credit as well as numerous live performances, in Canada, Germany and New Zealand. Her songs have been recorded by other artists in Canada, the US and Europe. She was a music supervisor for a documentary on Alberta cowgirls, called Pretty Ladies, Fast Horses on Bravo, one of her songs appeared on the television series, Dawson Creek and she has been a finalist in the Calgary Folk Festival song competition four times. She is a member of the Songwriters Association of Canada and a Board Member of Alberta Music Industry Association. You can learn more by visiting her website at www.coribrewster.com

Using paper pulp, fabric scraps, and tree alternative plant fibres, this workshop will explore sheet pulling/layering/embossing techniques in handmade papermaking.
Tessa Mendoza has been a recreational hand papermaker for the past 20 years. Her interest in papermaking stemmed from her need for paper with more
texture and warmth, for use in her origami works. Her handmade paper
combines recycled pulp with decorative additions, fibres from fabric scraps,
and alternative plant fibres. You may view her paperworks and origami
which are always in use and on display, at LunaBLUE Restaurant (107-721

SPONSORED BY RENEGADE ARTS ENTERTAINMENT
Migratory Words Writers' Collective is proud to announce our exciting artWord activities for the 2011 artsPeak Festival which will run June 14th to 19th. Now into his third year of the project, founder David Eso has been publishing local authors, hosting regular writers' circles, workshops, and most recently, residencies for writers from elsewhere. The goal of these residencies is to acknowledge literary accomplishment made by a writer living a very different environment than Canmore. The writer is invited to live as a Bow Valley local for a week, to absorb our social and ecological community, indulge in personal writing time, and to expose national talent to our small town audience.
Participating Artists in Residence:
Chris Masson
Chris Masson combines extensive theatrical training with his love of poetry to create a dynamic style of performance poetry that bounces between belligerence and humility, monologue and song, satire and sincerity. Alongside is work as an arts organizer and family man, Chris has created a one-man play, Pathos, Punchlines & Painkillers. He has recently transplanted himself from the cathedrals and snow banks of Montreal to the yoga studios and credit unions of East Vancouver.
Laurie Fuhr
Laurie Fuhr is a pillar of the literary scene in Calgary as a writer, musician, and editor. She hosts the monthly Flywheel reading series as Pages' Books and is managing editor of Filling Station, a leading journal of experimental writing. Alongside her writing life, she is member of the americana rock group Mercury Audio.
Robert Kroetsch
Novelist, poet, critic, and professor of literature, Robert Kroetsch was born in 1927 in Heisler, Alberta. Robert won a Governor General’s award for his novel The Studhorse Man in 1969 and in 2004 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is widely recognized not only as one of Canada's most accomplished and experimental writers, but also as a dedicated mentor in the literary world. His work explores the relationship between humans and their environment, their mythology, and their destiny. His latest collection of poetry, Too Bad: Sketches Toward a Self Portrait, was published by the University of Alberta Press in 2010.
Sid Marty
Sid Marty has been a staple of Western Canadian literature for forty years, penning 5 non-fiction books and four collections of poetry.
His books are about family, rangers, cowboys, homesteaders, forest fires, grizzly bears, love, death, mountaineers and wildlife conservation. Many of his poems were written literally from the saddle while working as a Warden in the National Parks of the Rocky Mountains from 1966-78. His poems appear in many Canadian anthologies, including the Oxford Book of Canadian Verse and in a number of school text books.
Artists Residency Activities:
Robert, Chris, and Laurie will participate in the Migratory Words writing circle on June 14th. This will be an opportunity to connect with local writers they will be able to interact with during their week in Canmore. Over the next few days, they will be performing at Canmore Collegiate High School, taking to the trails with the ledendary Ben Gadd, and discuss current issues in our community with councilor John Borrowman and Outlook reporter Tanya Foubert. During the festival proper, the writers will have the weekend to take in artspeak activities as well as give performances at the Miners' Union Hall for Canmore Caberet (Friday/Saturday) and at our Sunday Night Literary Saloon featuring Sid Marty, who will be launching his latest book, the Rider with Good Hands.
