Fans and critics all agree: Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is an up-and-coming musical force to be reckoned with. Since his modest first show at a tiny folk club in 2005 to the heights of Virginfest 2008, MBF is about to outgrow his hometown of Calgary.  At a time when the music industry is predominantly concerned with marketing generic bad boys and anti-heroes, MBF breaks from the pack with a refreshingly earnest and optimistic sound.  It's won him a local following which stands strong against any other Calgary act, and in addition to hometown fans, he's also gaining interest across the country. MBF has toured across Canada, sharing a bill with the likes of Roz Bell, Jully Black, The Wallflowers, Stars, and Hedley. He funded and recorded two independent EP's, selling thousands of copies off the stage.

MBF is known for rallying the music community and bringing them together.  In 2007, the University of Lethbridge supported the "These Proportions Are Epic" tour, where Michael escorted a band of 50 musicians playing University theatres throughout Alberta. That same year, Michael performed at Calgary's Grand Theatre with a backing band of 26 musicians, and then returned to that venue twice more with 54 performers on stage.  The Calgary community took notice of Michael's ambitions, and responded in spades. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts granted funding for a full length recording (recorded in Nashville) and The Calgary Stampede awarded him first prize in the 2007 Youth Talent Search. In 2008, Michael won X92 "Xposure" contest (landing him a spot in Virginfest), and "most promising songwriter" by the Calgary Folk Festival where he performed that year. Most recently Rawlco Radio has awarded a grant for the recording of his first full-length release.

His biggest accomplishment was revealed in June 2009 - "The MBF Love LP"; a full length studio album produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden), accompanied by the show entitled "Love and Manners" - a sight and sound spectacular coordinated by Michael which involved 120 local musicians, dancers and visual artists. The MBF Love LP is a successfully emotive collection of original compositions that are direct, funky, and immediately compelling. Comparisons can be traced to artists like Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and other familiar artists, but the vibe and execution are all his own.

We will use the language of color, texture line and text to describe our response to these questions. You don't want to just look at the pictures on your vision board, you want to take a minute and FEEL IT. Yes, feel what it would feel like if those pictures on your vision board were actually part of your life. Bring in pictures that inspire you, we will have magazines on hand to browse through and other mixed media you can incorporate as you create a vision for your life.

Using aspects of several traditions including Taoist and Buddhist approaches to meditation and visualization, participants will be guided through a series of breathing and visualization exercises.  This practice will connect participants with the elements, with nature and with interior and exterior spaces to help stimulate, refine and integrate with the creative process.  This meditation is suited for artists of every type but is also good for anyone simply interested in bringing a more peaceful mind, connection and flow to their daily lives.

#10, 102 Bow Meadows Crescent (403) 678-6131
After having gone to school for 6 years in the Netherlands and Germany, I came to Calgary with a backpack and toolbox. Like Alberta, I like to think of my jewellery as having a restrained beauty, an inner strength and I do believe jewellery has to be just beautiful enough to enhance the person who wears it. Alberta is open and wide in the East and majestic and sparse in the West, it has lots of inner strength and I appreciate and need that. Nature itself only goes just far enough to make it work in a particular setting. I like the sparseness yet grandeur and richness of this area and I want to be part of what I think is the most beautiful area of the word, a never ending source of pure inspiration.

Photoflow - Photography by Michael Buckley
1-626 Main Street (next door to Grizzly Paw)

When I am not photographing weddings or taking portraits of children and pets, I like to head out and see if the animals will share their lives with me. A Mountain Bluebird finding food for its young, a Muskrat meticulously cleaning itself, a Bear devouring ripe berries, a pair of Ravens sharing a tender moment, or a chance encounter peering into the intelligent, curious eyes of a Coyote. I come away from these new experiences with a new found appreciation of the natural world.

Through my photography I attempt to convey the elemental in the human and natural world, the private emotional moment, and the essence of animal lives unveiled. On a daily basis I am humbled by the subjects I meet, photograph, and get to know through my line of work.

A photojournalist based in Canmore, I am available for local, national or international assignments. www.photoflow.ca

Being Caribou & Finding Farley - The films of Leanne Allison
Sponsored by The DMF Group

Canmore Collegiate High School Theatre
1800 8th Avenue
Tickets:  adult - $10.00, children 16 & under - $5.00
*Program will include a 15 minute intermission

Wrap up your artsPeak weekend with a special “Canmore-made” double feature.

Since joining wildlife biologist and future husband Karsten Heurer on the final leg of his landmark journey from Yellowstone to Yukon, environmentalist Leanne Allison has documented the couples’ epic journeys with a gifted eye and sheer stamina.  Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, Leanne’s films have touched the lives of audiences around the world.

Being Caribou – 2004   72 minutes
A Gemini Award winner, Leanne’s filmmaking debut is a powerful and moving tale.   Following a migration of 120,000 caribou on foot across 1,500 kilometers of arctic tundra, Leanne and Karsten hope to raise awareness of the threats to the caribou’s survival.  Along the way they brave severe Arctic weather, icy rivers, hoards of mosquitoes and one very hungry grizzly bear.

Finding Farley – 2009   62 minutes
Having read Karsten’s book documenting the Being Caribou journey, 84 year old Canadian author Farley Mowat invites Karsten, Leanne and their two year-old son Zev to visit him at his home in Cape Breton.  Eschewing conventional methods of travel, the young family set off from their Canmore home by canoe with hopes of connecting to Mowat’s many tales of the land along the way.  Winner of the People’s Choice Award and the Grand Prize at the 2009 Banff Mountain Film Festival, Finding Farley is a delightful celebration of literature, family adventure and Canada’s natural wonders.

"125 Years of Art In and Just Outside Banff National Park "
- Presented by Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre

7:30 pm Friday, June 18, Canmore Civic Centre  - FREE

Join art historian, curator and writer Nancy Townshend for a public presentation on
"125 Years of Art in and just outside of Banff National Park ."

During its 125 years, Banff National Park and the Canmore area in all their splendor have attracted visual artists from near and far, from CPR-sponsored artists such as Lucius O'Brien, Frederic Bell-Smith and William McFarlane Notman, to A.C. Leighton, Walter Phillips and Banff-based John D. Curren and Jimmy Simpson, to Toronto-based Group of Seven members Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald to Banff-based Peter and Catharine Whyte, Byron Harmon and Carl Rungius to contemporary  Vancouver-based Jin-me Yoon to Banff/Canmore/Calgary-based ceramist Ed Bamling and painter Michael Cameron, Jan Kabatoff and Craig Richards, and Dulcie Foo Fat.

How did each of these artists transform the Canadian Rockies?  What value did/does the Rockies hold for them?  What are some of the environmental and social issues in and just outside of Banff National Park that engage contemporary  Canadian artists?

This presentation will address the power and capacity of Canadian art inspired by the Canadian Rockies to give our culture meaning  and identity.

Nancy is presently researching and writing a book on art inspired by the Canadian Rockies over the last two hundred years.  An Alberta Centennial Medalist, Nancy received her MA in the History of Art from the University of Toronto (1973).
